So many truly wonderful people have given their time, efforts and experience from the moment they heard of the fire in Toodyay. Some have dropped in and given invaluable help for some hours and others have been able to be there for days and months. All were there to give moral and emotional support as well as the practical help.....
THANKYOU ALL!
We would be remiss if we did not feature some of our wonderful volunteers.
Marlene Andrijich
One of the very first to arrive at the local hall as the fire disaster was in process, Marlene arrived at the Memorial Hall with the correct assumption that this would be the spot to which anyone being evacuated from their home would come and then went about setting up the kitchen to provide warm drinks and sandwiches.
On the night of the fire the Memorial Hall kitchen became a source of food going out to help the Salvation Army kitchen at the local oval as their own truck, with provisions, had not been able to get through due to the fire crossing the main road into Toodyay......... so 80 sandwiches went out to the oval to help feed fire fighters, the highway patrol and the helicopter pilots too as all these services operated from the oval during the first week.
From the second day of the fire, the Recovery Desk was established in the hall and this brought in the whole community. Soon the Bar at the entrance was set up with bottled water, tea, coffee and sweet treats while the kitchen went into full production for two months, supplying lunches and dinners for people whose homes were lost, others who had partial damage and were relocated until essential services could be reconnected to their homes and repairs done to make their homes habitable once again.
Marlene worked tirelessly during this time from early in the mornings through to around 8.30pm - yes, Marlene! you had wonderful people who workedalongside you for long hours and you had some fun but goodness your efforts were enormously appreciated ............ and too your fabulous sausage rolls........THANKYOU!
Melanie Pree and John Mitchinson with The OP-SHop Ladies
The Happening Place To Be was the Pavillion at the Sports Oval where Melanie and John co-ordinated and supervised truckloads upon truckloads of clothing and every manner of household items, along with ute loads of furniture..... all on a daily basis!
Along with many volunteers, items were sorted into type and size, labelled, displayed, furniture shifted, displayed, loaded onto outgoing utes, then more moved back to replace what had gone out, then it started all over again! As Melanie joked, “We’re calling it the Toodyay Weight-loss Centre, we have all lost so much weight”!
There were many laughs, hugs given out and endless effort in ‘finding’ just what it was that any individual needed. Much fuss was made for every child to make them feel special.
To one side, clothing was sorted into children’s sections, ladies and men’s, teens plus accessories while the other side became the household section where you could find anything from a salt shaker to a broom. The tearooms (The Earnest Lee Steere Pavillion) next door were set up as a furniture and white goods outlet, locally and currently called the ‘Hardly Normal Store’ - the level of organisation was spectacular and all done with good cheer!
John and Melanie took great care of all their supportive volunteers right down to organising dedicated lunch breaks and heading downtown to pick up sandwiches from Marlene at the kitchen........ it was important to keep all the those wonderful volunteers strong! ...... THANKYOU ALL!
A note.......... Melanie has urged everyone to come in and plan what you will need for the coming winter. There will be a load of wool rugs and sweaters coming and three loads of furnishings and white goods will be co-ordinated with pickups from Rockingham, through various Perth suburbs to Ellinbrook before heading to Toodyay between March 10th to 15th. These will be the last furniture deliveries organised with removalists.
The Pavillion HAS NOW CLOSED
Rosemary Madacsi
Food Glorious Food! Rosemary too was one of those 'on the spot' the day after the fire and stepped up to help sort the piles of donated food, pantry items and basic amenities that were pouring into the hall. From there it became apparent that a specific area would be needed to set it all out, co-ordinate the needs and to those who were in need.
Soon too, Rosemary had wonderful locals coming forward to help out and Rosemary being very organised too, had the new 'Hall Mart' up and running right down to stock takes so that people never ran out of what they required. Rosemary has become an incredibly effective 'lobbyist' to businesses and the broader communities for assistance with non perishables for our fire affected community.
Many businesses sent up pallets of food and provisions and individuals have personally come in to donate to the cause. Before opening for 'business' each day, Rosemary was there by 8am each morning and often there until around 7 to 8pm of an evening. Again, the most wonderful support and effort made on behalf of our community.
THANKYOU TO ROSEMARY AND ALL THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN A PART OF YOUR TEAM!
